I have know people to take 3x 8 hr days to comb out very mature dreads of 10 years and others take 3 weeks to comb out 3 year old mature dreads.

How do i know when my dreads are locked. You may already have dreads but struggle with getting your dreads to lock quickly and effectively. Those who are new to dreadlocks may see budding as a problem that needs to be fixed but it is a natural and necessary part of the locking process. Budding is when the hair in dreadlocks begins to mat and swell.

Having at least a little bit of loose hair is even considered desirable by some. Methods like backcombing twisting and palm rolling will help to lock and set your dreads.

If you want to make your dreadlocks lock faster the fastest way to do this is to keep them clean. At any point in the locking process its considered normal to have between 1 and 3 of loose undreaded growth at your roots. Like other natural hair styles dreadlocks need to be kept clean.
